were measured on nutrient agar plates. In all three species, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0% lithium chloride progressively increased the colony sizes. On the other hand, 2.0, 3.5, and 5.0% LiCl progressively reduced the colony diameters, resulting in the isolation of predominantly small-colony variants (Table 1). It is probable that the higher concentrations of LiCl selected small-colony variants from the original population, since there was a marked reduction in the total population when the cells were grown in 2% LiCl or higher concentration. At the lower concentrations of LiCl, selection may still have been involved; however, probably other mechanisms were involved that stimulated the growth of the colonies. Evidence is presented for the existence of diphasic effects of LiCl on the colony size of shigellae. A wide variety of diphasic effects have been recorded with enzyme poisons (Clark, General Pharmacology, "Handbuch der Experimentellen Pharmakologie," vol. 4, Verlag von Julius Springer, Berlin, 1937). To our knowledge this is the first report of diphasic colony variation caused by a toxic agent.

The effects of climate change on the distribution of an invasive fish in Iran: Gambusia holbrooki (Girard, 1859)
Today, invasive species are considered as one of the major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The suitable habitats of these species are expected to be expanded under the effects of future climate change hence it is likely to threaten the existence of native species. Consequently, identifying the current and potential distribution range of invasive species is essential for managem...

The aim of this study is to provide necessary information on the biology of mosquitofish in Seyhan Dam Lake in Adana, which is located in southern part of Turkey. The population structure of eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 was studied in Seyhan Dam Lake. A total of 1582 specimens (772 males and 810 females) were collected monthly from January to December, 2007. The age comp...
متن کاملSexual dimorphism of Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859) in Gamasiab River, Kermanshah province
Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 is considered as one of the non-native and invasive species in the inland waters of Iran. This species occurs in most inland basins and aquatic bodies of Iran and has even been found in brackish waters. Extensive adaptations of this species to its different habitats caused numerous changes in its biological characteristics and morphological traits. The present st...

متن کاملPopulation Cage Experiments with a Vertebrate: the Temporal Demography and Cytonuclear Genetics of Hybridization in Gambusia Fishes.
The dynamics of mitochondrial and multilocus nuclear genotypic frequencies were monitored for 2 yr in experimental populations established with equal numbers of two poeciliid fishes (Gambusia affinis and Gambusia holbrooki) that hybridize naturally in the southeastern United States. In replicated "small-pool" populations (experiment I), 1018 sampled individuals at six time periods revealed an i...
